Trail shared by Karl W

A trail connecting the Barr Trail to the Pikes Peak Toll Road along a scenic and infrequently taken path.

Karl W

Features Views · Wildlife

This is a there-and-back that ends on the Pikes Peak Toll Road (or starts from it), which means you should plan accordingly - you cannot hike down the toll road.

Description

This trail starts off the Barr Trail at the Barr Camp just under seven miles into the Barr Trail. The trail more or less follows the topographical line around Pikes Peak (but does gain elevation too). The trail starts in the forest from the camp and heads north.

You'll pass through forests with views that occasionally open to nice views of the steep cliffs on the northern edge of Pikes Peak. Further along, you'll come to some old mines with large iron equipment still sitting and rusting. The trail ends above tree line at a major switchback on the Pikes Peak Toll Road. There is not much room for parking here so you may want to arrange for a pick up.

Went about 2/3 of the way to toll road from Barr Calp. Snow in low spots and drifts cause post-holing. Bring traction. Nice hike though.
