Family Friendly Short, easy, and fun in the sun. A great swimming option for the day.

Description

From the parking area, begin on the trail to the right of information sign. There you'll start a moderate climb through the trees. Look behind you, as you gain altitude, and you'll be blessed with views of thunderous Thunder Mountain (the backside of Kirkwood ski resort), high above Silver Lake and Kit Carson Lodge.

The trail then moves out of tree line and quickly climbs to a ridge, where you can then see Shealor Lake in the distance. A short meander down leads you to the lake which has some nice camping spots or you can picnic on a granite slab for the day.

This area is great for children, families, and dogs are welcome. I was surprised to see three people doing laps and synchronized swimmers! There are a few nearby lakes to also check out if too many folks are cramping your style... Be prepared to scramble off-trail and descend to other areas. Worth the fun! Bring your topo map or use the Hiking Project mobile app, binoculars, and remember your sunscreen!

We reached the top of the ridge in under a half hour and the views were great! We could spot people already swimming through our binoculars not far from the Shealor Lakes Trail.

We found an amazing giant slab on our way to another, quieter unnamed lake on the Shealor Lake Trail.

Great hike, and it wasn't crowded at all. We took our time and enjoyed the scenery. It isn't far, but you can't hear any Hwy traffic at all. Peaceful. 1.4mi
