Description

A colony of prairie dogs is called a town, and Roberts Prairie Dog Town is the largest prairie dog town in the country. The underground complex covers several acres and is inhabited by thousands of black-tail prairie dogs. Many of them are highly habituated to people, as a nearby gift shop sells peanuts to feed them, and you can safely observe these adorable critters up close. There are also predators and many other species that also use the prairie dog dens that can be seen there, and the Sage Creek area is the best spot in the Badlands North Unit to observe buffalo.

On the Road: From Badlands Scenic Route 240, take the dirt Sage Creek road about a mile.

Family Friendly: Cute animals doing cute things.
