Description

Crater Lake is nestled in a beautiful mountain cirque surrounded by jagged peaks. Crater Lake and Mirror Lake both offer jaw-dropping views of rugged peaks, especially Lone Eagle Peak which is known for its dramatic, pointy summit. This is one of the most iconic views in the Indian Peaks Wilderness.

Overnight Trip: Crater Lake can be accessed via Monarch Lake on the west side of the Indian Peaks Wilderness or from the east side via Brainard Lake and Pawnee Pass. Most people visit Crater Lake on a backpacking trip, but you could also access as a long day hike.

Backpacked 8/1-8/2; sighted moose on the way up and down. Very buggy and some muddy spots with the recent rain

Beautiful hike and a generally well-maintained trail. Very heavy traffic over the weekend.

Mostly Dry, Fallen Trees - Beware! We entered via Monarch Lake with a 2 night pass to camp in the Cascade Creek BZ. Despite it being mid June, we navigated over literally 50+ trees to get to the junction of Cascade Creek Trail amd Crater Lake Trail. We camped lower down, but had planned to spend our second night by Pawnee Lake. The trail was NOT NAVIGABLE past the Crater Lake junction. I spoke with the Park Service and they said they'd try to get some kind of notification up on Rec.gov. But if you're planning to do the loop, even as a runner, it's impassable due to fallen trees. They ready shouldn't be selling passes to an area that is inaccessible.
