Big Tree Wayside [Suggest Edits]

If you have high hopes of observing a superlatively large Coastal Redwood, a stop at the Big Tree Wayside is a must. Soaring to a height of 304 ft, you'll have a difficult time seeing the top of The Big Tree itself, but with a circumference of 68 feet it won't be difficult to appreciate the size of the tree. Growing to such an incredible size isn't short work, and it's estimated that this tree is 1500 years old. Slow down while meandering through the area to appreciate the long history of these trees!

The Big Tree itself sits within a grove of neighbors, and the forest here is quite pleasant. Due to historic logging, the area is more open than other groves in the park, allowing for more undergrowth to thrive. This provides ample sunlight for photos, and an airy and enjoyable feel. The short walk is well your it to see this granddaddy of a tree, as well as the diverse ecosystem preserved here.

Short Walk: There is a parking just north of the Prairie Creek Visitor Center off the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway.
