Description

There really isn't an established trail to the summit of Shoshoni. This is a recorded route from Pawnee Pass but if you follow the topography, you'll be fine.

First, head lookers left up and around the talus hill. This is slow going and requires balance or a hand here and there. Stay on the east side and keep to the middle contour which will continue on the other side (you can obviously scramble to the top but then you'll need to scramble down the other side). There is a very exposed mini saddle on the other side that can be very windy but views into Pawnee Lake basin are good.

Follow the contours south through more talus toward the more open meadow you see ahead. The footing gets easier especially if you head southwest but then you'll need to head southeast/east to head to the summit of Shoshoni.

The summit is beautiful with a couple pinnacles that require a couple class 3+/4 moves. The exposure isn't bad where you'll climb up, but the south sides of the pinnacles are dramatic drop-offs. The views toward Isabelle Glacier, the Navajo Snowfield, and accompanying peaks are incredible. You couldn't be more above Lake Isabelle unless you were air-bound.
