Description

This portion of the Zaleski Backpacking Trail is not as well-maintained as the South and West Loops. The trail begins in Camp 2, and the first portion of the trail to Route 56 is relatively easy to follow but, in parts, filled with chest-high undergrowth that encroaches on the trail. There are a few tricky creek crossings. The second portion of the trail is the highlight—it passes through Doolittle Plantation, an old pine plantation. This part is relatively flat and easy hiking. At around the halfway mark, in the pine plantation, there are a few benches and a memorial set up around a European Larch where one can rest. The third portion of the trail climbs back up to Camp 2, and can be quite muddy.

We hiked this (counterclockwise) as a day hike while camping at site 3. Parts overgrown with numerous trees fallen. Would be challenging with a pack. 7.2mi — 13h 00m

Hiked from State Route 56 and did half Northern Loop back to State Route 56. The Enderlin/Doolittle Forest was spectacular! 5mi — 3h 20m
