Family Friendly Easy trail, educational opportunities

Description

From the trailhead in the headquarters area, the trails radiate out like spokes on a wheel; Pine Run Trail heads to the north-northwest. Most of the trails in the park are actually gravel roads that serve the staff while checking on the different experimental plots. About 90% of this trail is on gravel road, but this changes near the end. The road ends at a turnaround and transitions to singletrack trail. The trail portion turns off the road to the right, and switchbacks down the hill, ending at the Belgian coke ovens. Hiking past the ovens and down the hill brings you creekside, where you can look at the ruins of the iron furnaces set against the hillside.
