From Brook Street in Nelson City, start from the carpark at the start of Tantragee Road. Either take the steeper singletrack on Tantragee Access opposite the carpark or hike up Tantragee Road past the water treatment plant to the forest gate on Tantragee Saddle.

Through the gate, turn hard right and follow up Fringed Hill Road to the communication towers at the top of the hill overlooking Nelson City at 2,602 ft (793 m). Black Diamond Ridge trail heads off to the east and the Te Ara Koa Trail drops to the west.
