One way to start this trail is to park at the resort and hike past the lake and then onto Tahoe Drive where the trail becomes obvious on the side of Tahoe Drive. Another way is to come up the 24 hour race climb and turn right at the top onto the singletrack just before you reach Airport Road.

As shown, the trail parallels Airport Road and goes onto the "island" section, which has a few interesting boulders to navigate.

From the start, the trail mostly follows the contour with short bits of ascending and descending. Eventually, you'll come out on a doubletrack. Cross it to stay on the singletrack.

This is the "island" part, stay to your left at the first junction and the trail will wrap around bringing you back out to the doubletrack. Here, if you again cross the road, you can hike a very short singletrack extension that brings you back to the road again. Turn right and head out to the end of the old runway avoiding some large puddles.

At the end, you gain access to the Big Fern Loop, which is a loop trail that goes out to Dumbauld Road and back. You'll likely hear target practice in this area.
