Description

This trail offers a great option for those looking to make a shorter loop or those looking to spread the climb to the blufftops out over a longer distance. Horn Hollow also tends to be one of the less crowded trails at Pike's Peak, though crowds tend not to be an issue anywhere away from the overlook area.

The trail mostly contours with the drainage areas, and the tread itself is one of the most enjoyable in the park. While Chinquapin Ridge Trail can be a bit gravelly, Horn Hollow is decidedly dirt and decidedly singletrack.

The route passes through a few seasonally flowing creeks and is well shaded throughout.

Jeweled Shooting Star can be spotted just a few hundred yards down the trail from the Chinquapin Ridge Trail junction; a relatively rare woodland wildflower and difficult to catch in bloom; this little fellow is quite a treat.

Regarding the difficulty of this trail, Horn Hollow features no significant climbs, but has a bit more technicality than some of the other well-trodden routes. It adds to the experience, rather than adding difficulty. People seeking a good hike to bolster their agility and ankle strength without burning out their lungs or calves on steep climbs should consider lapping this trail a few times.

Flora & Fauna

Excellent mushroom hunting; downed trees and old growth make for a spacious forest. Chicken-of-the-Woods and Oyster Mushrooms are common. Morels tend to get picked over by local hunters, but if you can beat them to it, the conditions are often good for a feast.
