This unofficial trail splits off of the Rush Branch section of Rough Trail near the western Rough Trail/Sheltowee Trace intersection. From the intersection head west on Rough Trail for a few dozen yards to a point just before the trail switches back and begins a steep descent. To the right another unmarked trail heads into a rough patch of woods. This is the spur trail.

Continue through an initial thicket of pine trees. The trail will open up shortly and hike through open woods. After a moderate distance, it passes through another section of stunted pines and sporadic deadfall before exiting into open forest again. Bear right as you cross the knob and follow the narrowing ridge to an exposed and rocky point. This is Hanson's Point. Views of Chimney Top Rock and Chimney Top Creek below are incredible from this vantage point. This is also a popular backpacking destination.
