An Oregon sno-park permit is required to park at the Summit Sno-park. Parking along Highway 140 is both illegal and dangerous. Annual permits cost $25, a 3–day permit costs $9, and a 1-day permit costs $4. Permits are sold at all Motor Vehicle offices, online at oregondmv.com/dmv2u, and by permit sales agents at various resorts, sporting goods stores, and other retail outlets. There is a vault toilet at the Summit Sno-Park.

This is one of the Jackson Klamath Winter Trails (Fourmile Lake Area) that wind their way through the Fremont-Winema National Forest starting from the Summit Sno-Park off Highway 140 in Southern Oregon.

The McLoughlin leaves the Lower Canal Nordic Trail about 0.7 miles northeast of the sno-park and heads east. After an initial climb and descent, it begins a gentle climb around Point 5568, 2.4 miles from Lower Canal. It crosses the Petunia Nordic Trail after 0.3 miles and junctions with the Pitt View Nordic Trail and the Powerline Nordic Trail at 1.2 and 1.4 miles, respectively. After swinging around the point, the McLoughlin heads north, passing the Summit Shelter, and a junction with the Petunia Nordic Trail then climbing gently for about 2 miles before descending to end at the upper end of the Lower Canal Nordic Trail.

The Summit Shelter is stocked during the winter months with wood for snowshoers and skiers needing warmth and shelter. There is no food, water, or other amenities at this shelter.
