The Zuni-Acoma trail spans eight miles of lava flows varying in age as old as 3,000 years old. This trail is described by many as similar to walking on another planet. The eastern edge of this trail is made up of more monolithic slabs while the western half is fist and football sized rocks that make this trail evil on the muscles in your ankles.

The trail is marked with piles of stone (cairns), each visible from the next. Don’t lose site of the cairns or you might get lost. Don’t let the mileage or elevation fool you, even experienced hikers can take as many as 6 hours to complete this trail. This trail will also chew up shoes, so leave the flip-flops at home.

Hiking in groups of two or more is highly recommended as people have gotten lost and missing on this trail. Falls on the lava flows can result in cuts and severe scrapes. If you are going to bring dogs, please have paw covers of some sort.
