Overview

This is an easy-to-moderate hike through the forest, across streams and the Sassafras Creek, boardwalks, and roads. The start of the track is behind the hall in the main street of Sassafras and winds through the forest to Emerald.

Need to Know

There are toilet facilities available at Baynes Park and cafes to get some breakfast or lunch in both Sassafras and Emerald.

Description

This moderate length hike, which is approximately 5 hours one-way, winds through the Dandenong Ranges to pass many reserves and picnic grounds such as Beagleys Bridge Picnic Ground, Baynes Park and Kays, Olympic and Kensley's picnic grounds between Kallista and Monbulk.

There are markers along the track, which are handy with all of the road crossings along the way. The track can get quite muddy through the wet winter months. Most of the track is on forest tracks, some of which run alongside roads. From Sassafras to Kallista is a moderate descent, but the rest of the track is fairly flat.
