Description

Starting from Lady Moon, you'll cross a meadow on trails that can be difficult to spot at times, and swampy in springtime. This trail is popular with horseback riders who often head east on a trail that goes past Lady Moon Lake, so be sure to bear south-southwest across the field instead of going east.

After you cross the meadow, look for a wide, flat, green post about three feet high - this marks the place where the trail becomes clearer and starts uphill.

Downed trees are easy to get around or over, so just follow the trail uphill. At the high point of the trail, you'll arrive at the junction of Lady Moon Trail and Granite Ridge Trail #991. A short hike to the west there's a gate across the Granite Ridge Trail, but you'll want to turn left and go through a green gate that is the start of the downhill leg. Watch for cattle (and cowpies), and be sure to close the gate after you!

Continue downhill. This part of the trail tends to run with water when the snow is melting, so be prepared to be wet. As the view opens up to the south, be sure to keep an eye out across the valley to the south - if you look up at the right time, you'll have a view of the gold-topped Great Stupa.

Eventually, the trail flattens out and trails branch off to the right/west. Turn left and hike across a gully, then up a short, steep hill. Turn right at the saddle, and bear right when the trail forks - you'll be heading downhill to Elkhorn Creek. At Elkhorn Creek, you can ford the creek, or follow the bank to the left until you find a couple of makeshift log bridges to stay high and dry.

Flora & Fauna

Watch for deer, elk, and moose, especially around Elkhorn Creek. This trail is popular with hunters, so wear bright colors during hunting season.
