Dogs No Dogs
Description
The Gates of Lodore Trail starts at the end of the RV/Trailer Turnaround of the Gates of Lodore Campsite. The steepest sections have steps built in, and then it levels out for a short walk above the Green River. After about half of a mile, the trail dead-ends at a large flat outcropping of rock overlooking the impressive Gates of Lodore.
If you're here mid-morning, you might see some whitewater trips starting their journey down the Green River. Watch for multicolor rafts and playful kayaks disappearing into the maw of the Gates. In the evening, the sun paints the west-facing wall of the canyon as it disappears over the horizon. Regardless of the time of your visit, the view from the end of the trail is spectacular. You should give yourself plenty of time to admire the geology and the wildlife that scampers and flies about. Make sure to bring bug spray and cover up! There is very little shade and the mosquitos are persistent and numerous once dusk comes around.
There is no water available on the trail, so make sure to bring plenty. The informational sign at the trailhead recommends one gallon per person in the peak of summer heat. The trail is not steep besides the sections of stairs and friendly for the whole family, but dogs are not allowed. As usual, make sure to pack out all trash.
