Check local weather, access to this trail often closed due to flooding. Pay close attention to the flash flood warnings - they are no joke here. Dangerous shorebreak and riptides at Hanakapi`ai beach - use extreme caution (don't go into the ocean at this beach).

Need to Know

Notice: As of June 2019, advance reservations are now required for all vehicles, walk-in entry, and shuttle riders visiting Hāʻena State Park, as well as for day hikers accessing the Kalalau Trail. Plan your trip accordingly. Reservations may be may be made up to 30 days in advance, and no later than the day before your visit. For day permits and information go to: gohaena.com.
If parking to hike the Hanakapi'ai trail, it is recommended to get a morning and afternoon parking pass.

Four creek crossings; fairly easy to navigate, but be careful of the force of the flowing stream. You can swim in the pool at the falls; but watch for falling rocks near the falls (we saw them fall!) Main Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi'ai Beach can get crowded with tourists hiking, so suggest to get an early start.

Description

A beautiful trail off of the Kalalau Trail leading to the 300 foot tall Hanakapi'ai Falls. The trail here can be very slippery, narrow and steep, but the scenery and views are definitely worth it. It will require an occasional scramble. You'll feel like you are running through Jurassic Park! The creek crossings are straightforward, but be cautious of the flash flood warnings and use the suspension rope to balance.
