A relatively easy hike on a dirt road, with several opportunities to access the river.
Description
This hike, which some locals call the Colibri, is easily accessed from Ayampe and provides decent shade, as well as opportunities to cool yourself off by splashing in the river.
The hike begins on the northern edge of town at the intersection of the Ruta del Spondylus and Calle los Tonatos. Head up the dirt road. About 150m in, the road splits, with the lower (left) branch taking you down to the river. The trail continues to the right. It soon enters the forest and gently climbs. There are several breaks in the trees that provide some nice views of the Ayampe River and surrounding hillsides. The road deadends in a small cul-de-sac, where there is also the option to drop down to the river.
As you hike, watch (and listen) for howler monkeys - if you're lucky you might spot them in the tree tops.
