Yellowstone Picnic Area is under construction as of 2025. Access from the Specimen Ridge Trailhead.

Description

This trail is reached from the Specimen Ridge Trail. After departing from that trail, Agate Creek Trail gradually ascends 500 feet through open sagebrush meadows before plunging 1300 feet to the Yellowstone River near the mouth of Agate Creek.

Save some energy for the tough climb back out! There is one backcountry campsite (2Y1) along Agate Creek Trail for backpackers (with a backcountry permit from Yellowstone National Park) to use. Permits are not required for day hiking.
