Description
Sims Bayou is one of the major drainages in the Houston region, and one that has benefitted from greenway development. Unfortunately, in early 2022, the retaining wall under 288 South Freeway failed and as a result the underpass will be closed indefinitely. Though there is a marked detour around the underpass using Airport Blvd, the Upper
Sims Bayou Greenway will remain a separate trail for the foreseeable future.
The trail begins at Hillcroft at the Blue Ridge Park and initially runs downstream on the right bank of the bayou. Though the trail is generally provided with underpasses, there is a grade crossing at Heatherbrook where the trail uses the street bridge to cross over to the left bank. The trail ends about one quarter mile west of 288, where a drainage bridge entrance is blocked.
A detour using Kirby, the Houston Sports Park access roads and the sidewalk on the south side of Airport Blvd provides a crossing of 288 and a connection to the downstream
Sims Bayou Greenway at Margaret Jenkins Park. The detour is clearly marked with signs.
