Family Friendly Steep, but short enough to be doable for most.

Overview

This is a short but steep jaunt to a winter ski hut, or a summertime picnic spot that's above the tree line. It makes the perfect short hike for a day trip to Berthoud Pass, or a great way to stretch the legs while on a longer drive. In winter, this is an excellent snowshoe hike.

Need to Know

This trail is a high alpine trail that typically doesn't melt out until hike mid to late June. If visiting in winter to ski or snowshoe, be aware road conditions can sometimes make Berthoud Pass inaccessible, and avalanche danger may persist even if the road is open.

Description

The hike starts at the Second Creek Trailhead near Berthoud Pass. The trail moves quickly upward and is wide at first, but then makes a steeper and rockier section near the tree line. Just before reaching Broome Hut, there are some picnic tables with an amazing view of the Second Creek headwall.

The hut is closed to the public (can be reserved for overnight stays in winter), but you can walk around all sides of it, and continue higher up the Second Creek Trail #137 if you choose. It leads eventually to Mount Nystrom Trail #13 in the Vasquez Peak Wilderness.
