Description
To access the Crockett Shoals Overlook Trail, there are two ways you can access the trail. You can either depart from the end of the campground, drop down a small hill and cross a bridge, go past a small fire-pit/amphitheater, and climbs uphill. At a tenth of a mile, the trail intersects with the other trailhead that is at a parking area on Charles Johnson Road. The trail turns to the left at this point and climbs up the bluffs.
The trail is a loop at this point and you can take either the upper trail or the lower trail. If you continue straight, this is the upper path and it climbs gently uphill past a small shelter where there is some seating where you can enjoy the views. The trail is a singletrack dirt trail that weaves through the woods and in the spring and summer, is well shaded. After going about 1/3 of a mile, the trail drops down the hill and starts to make its way back to the trailhead. Along this portion of the trail, there are some obstructed views of the Nolichucky River. You may see geese or other waterfowl in the river below you.
The trail passes another shelter with seating where you can enjoy the views before the trail climbs up some wood steps and hits the junction. Turn to the right and make your way back to the trailhead where you left your car.
Flora & Fauna
Various waterfowl can be seen along the Nolichucky River, especially around the corner from the Crockett Shoals.
