One Way Only: This is designated as a directional trail.
Description
This trail was completed in 2023, making it a welcome addition to the new trail system called Durango Mesa Park. The Intermediate
Downhill trail is a lengthy series of large and medium sized jumps, tabletops and berms. Since this trail is primarily used by mountain bikers, be especially careful if you are walking here.
Start at the large raised platform at the western end of the
Meadow Knob Connector. From this knob, plunge downhill through a succession of steep switchbacking berms interspersed with impressive jumps. The lips of the jumps are all armored with rectangular, flat stones to keep the surface from deteriorating and to keep the launches consistent.
As you snake your way downhill and across the cliff that makes up the edge of the mesa, you could enjoy the views across at Smelter Mountain and the La Plata Mountains if your eyes were not glued to the features. There is much more shade on this trail than on the downhill trails in Horse Gulch.
At near the mid-point of this trail, it bumps up nearly against the
Mesa Connector trail on the same ridgeline. Continue the rowdy descent until a final set of switchbacks dumps you out on the bottom of
Mesa Connector where a short uphill and downhill (bi-directional) portion of trail is shared until ending at the trailhead parking lot. Use caution on this steeper, congested part!
