Description

From the junction with Whiskey Creek Trail #16E02 and Western States Trail, make your way across the alpine meadows north of Shanks Cove. After 0.6 miles, the trail starts its main ascent towards the ridgeline in front of you. The surrounding is increasingly volcanic in nature and a viewpoint at 1 mile gives you a great panoramic view of Granite Chief Wilderness.

At 1.3 miles, you also get a spectacular view of the Picayune Valley to the northwest. Continue further up the ridgeline until the trail becomes mostly level around 1.6 miles. Enjoy the vast views that unfold to your left. Reach the junction with Greyhorse Trail #15E13 at 2 miles. From here on, the trail ascends into Shanks Cove with views soon concealed by trees. Cross small creeks a few times and reach Five Lakes Creek Trail #15E31 at 5 miles.
