Overview
The hike starts in forested slopes and continues uphill to the summit of Fields Peak (7,349 ft). Beautiful 360 degree views from the summit include the John Day Valley (north) and McClellan Mountain (east).
Description
The trailhead can be difficult to find and is a steep, rough road. About 13 miles east of Dayville, OR, turn south on Fields Creek Road (FR 21) and drive about 8 1/2 miles until you see a sign for FR 115 (if you reach the summit of Fields Creek Road and start heading downhill, you've passed it and need to turn around). FR 115 dead ends at another road (FR 2160).
To your left (north) should be a gate. You want to go right (south) for a couple hundred yards and on your left (east) you should see FR 041. Follow FR 041 to the trailhead (a detailed map of the area is helpful to find the trailhead and not get lost on logging roads that branch off of FR 041).
The trail follows an ATV trail (ATVs are allowed on it) through forested slopes for about 1 1/2 miles when the country opens up into grassy slopes. A side trail to McClellan Mountain (which travels through the McClellan Mountain Semi-Primitive Non-Motorized area) should be visible heading east along the ridge. Fields Peak is straight ahead about a mile.
