Need to Know

From White Bird drive southeast on Old Highway 95 towards the Salmon River. Turn right and cross the river on the distinctive silver truss bridge. Turn left onto Deer Creek Road immediately after crossing the river. The pavement turns to gravel as the road winds its way up the mountainside. Soon after crossing the forest boundary there is rough dirt road turning off to the right. If your vehicle does not have high clearance it is recommended that you park here. The trail begins at the end of this road.

Description

The trail begins at Motthorn Saddle, at the end of Forest Road 76049. The trail begins with a very steep climb up the north side of the saddle, following an old fireline. There is some ATV use along the fireline. The trail levels off slightly before beginning to climb again, less steeply this time, and summits a minor point on the ridge. All ATV use ends at this point as the terrain becomes unsuitable.

The trail continues as singletrack along the crest of the ridge. The trail soon drops to the west side of the ridge and begins sidehilling towards a small gap, where Wildhorse Ridge branches off from the main ridge. Soon after you are through the pass the trail drops down towards Big Canyon Saddle in a couple of steep switchbacks. This is the junction with Big Canyon Trail to the west, and Deer Creek Trail to the east.

The trail passes through a gate in the fence and swings to the west side of the ridge, climbing gently. The trail soon regains the top of the ridge and continues climbing steadily. The trail soon turns east, passing through another gate before making a sharp turn to the left and beginning to sidehill along the east side of the ridge. The trails northern terminus is at an unnamed track near the summit of Camp Howard.
