Need to Know

The trail has been rerouted after the 2008 American River Complex Fire, so it may deviate from your map.

Description

To access the trail, follow the 2WD road past the campground that quickly turns into a 4WD road. There is a register at the trailhead with comments on how demanding this trail is and that is not an overstatement. This trail loses almost 3,000 feet of elevation and you'll have to make your way back up again.

Views of the American River Gorge are somewhat scarce along the way, but it is fairly shady which makes this a pleasant summer hike. Be careful not to touch the poison oak along the lower half of the trail. Most of the descent is very uneventful with numerous switchbacks and some fairly steep sections. The river is easily accessible with camp sites close by.
