ADA Accessible This is a flat, paved trail with easy access and lots of benches.

Family Friendly Besides being flat, paved and with lots of rest points, this trail offers swan boat rentals in the reservoir, and is next door to the Turtle Back Zoo. A McLoone's restaurant near the trail is a plus.

Description

This is a short, easy, scenic looper around a reservoir in Essex County's South Mountain Reservation. The trails is flat and paved, with lots of benches to stop and rest on. Other singletrack trails connect with the reservoir loop and venture into other parts of the reservation.

With spring, comes the vibrant colors along the loop road.

When it's foggy, the Orange Reservoir can be a gloomy, eerie place. The trees disappear in the distance, and it's hard to see across the small reservoir.

The tracks of the Turtle Back Zoo's miniature train ride run parallel to a section of the Orange Reservoir Loop. The miniature train ride is free for the zoo visitors (no separate tickets are sold).

These polywood chairs are everywhere for you to enjoy the beautiful setting of the reservoir - both near the entrance, as well as at the west end of the reservoir loop.
