In the winter, some sections are groomed for skiing (hiking is OK), other sections are part of a snowmobile trail, and some is not maintained.
Need to Know
Three Rivers Parks allows a few Deer Hunts in the Fall. They have gotten better about posting these ahead of time and on the websites. As long as you stay on the trail (and don't wear antlers) you can still hike. But if the idea of hiding camouflaged people with weapons bothers you, just check the website
before you go.
There are two seasonal water fountains. The first is near the horse barn (approximately 1 mile). Shortly thereafter, another is located near the large restrooms near the first bike path crossing.
I usually start at the Horse Trailer Parking lot. My first lap is usually heading north (to the right out of the parking area. After an old stand of trees, there is meadow and then a slight rise to hike roughly parallel to 24. A road crosses and then you hike by a horse barn for We Can Ride.
Next up is a paved bike route (which connects to Crow Hassan) and a restroom (closed in the winter). Heading southwest, the trail crosses the bike path to Baker Park Campground then goes on a nice stretch with the only appreciable hill that provides a nice view.
After the hill there is a slight junction when you cross a paved bike path. The trail heading right (west) is the snowmobile trail. Stay left, and you'll be entering some more open, slightly tolling terrain until running parallel along 12. There is a sharp left and it leads to a pit toilet. Let's be hones here, hikers. How many trails have three pit toilets in a 6 mile stretch??? Luxury.
Continuing on, the trail is more open with a nice climb to a hill top. Coming down the hill, you'll get back to some trees most of the way back.
Flora & Fauna
Positives: Gorgeous foliage in the fall. Sweeping views. Some mildly fragrant spring blooms in sections.
Negatives: Horse flies and gnats.
