Overview
This hike is a lovely one to do on a hot summer day. The trail parallels the brook the entire time and is almost always shaded, keeping you cool. Visit just one or all three of the falls as you hike this one.
Description
You can start this hike from either end, however, starting at the lower falls parking is generally more popular as you'll hike up and then have a nice long downhill on the return trip.
From the Lower Falls parking area take the
Purgatory Brook Trail. There are several side trails you can opt for but if you want to make a short loop or add a few miles. Staying on the
Purgatory Brook Trail you'll reach the Lower Falls in just a half-mile. The Lower Falls are quite impressive. The river is divide above by a few rocks causing several streams to cascade into the large pool at the base.
From here, continue venturing north along Purgatory Brook. Though the shade and nearby water cool things off, it does also attract some bugs, so bring along some repellant to keep them at bay. You'll pass both intersections for the
Wah Lum Loop. After a little over two miles of hiking, you'll reach the Middle Falls and before long the Upper Falls and the end of your hike. After enjoying each cascade, return the way you came.
