Description

This is a fun but quite technical trail in the Tortolita Trail system maintained by the Town of Marana. It stays lower down than the Alamo Springs Trail or Wild Mustang Trail and loops around both sides of the Wild Burro Trail. From the main trailhead, begin by heading north on the Wild Burro Trail until reaching the main junction and sign-in area. You can reach the trail going east or west from here, but this route is mapped heading east (counter-clockwise direction).

You'll travel up the Alamo Springs Trail for a short duration before taking a left heading a bit northeast. The trail is very straightforward and eventually crosses the wash and directly across the Wild Burro Trail before heading into the hillside again on the west side. It never approaches near the height of the Wild Mustang Trail, instead staying much lower down.

Eventually the trail connects back with the Wild Burro Trail. If you make a hard left, you'll head back up the canyon or if you continue straight at this junction, heading south, you'll head back towards the hotel and main junction, also towards the Upper Javelina Trail, which you'll reach before the main junction.

Overall this is a fun, shorter trail that doesn't get a lot of use. Just be prepared for a good amount of very technical terrain. There aren't any major climbs on this entire route, but a few are punchy ones that are made more challenging by the rocky terrain. The descents are also not too fast because of that rocky footing.

Flora & Fauna

All the usual desert critters can be seen on this trail, including plenty of rattlesnakes.
