This trail is within the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness and the usual federal wilderness area regulations and restrictions apply here. Practice Leave No Trace (LNT) backcountry skills and ethics. Camp 100 feet from fragile areas; bury human waste at least 200 feet from water, trails, and campsites. This trail is usually closed by snow between November and May.

Description

This trail leaves the Grasshopper Trail #1574 and travels easily upward for less than a mile to the summit of Grasshopper Mountain and the former site of a fire lookout. The trail receives some maintenance and is easy to follow to within 500 horizontal feet of the top. Here it grows faint as it crosses a shallow bowl filled with grasses. The trail becomes readily apparent again on the other side of this bowl.

A fire lookout camp had been set on top of Grasshopper in 1912 and a cupola cabin was built there in 1925. This was followed in 1933 by an L-4 cab which was replaced in 1958 by a 10-foot R-6 flat cab (the parts of which were lifted to the summit by helicopter). All the structures were removed in 1977. All that remains today are the four concrete foundations of the 1958 lookout.
