Description

The trail continues from the end of leg one and follows an old ranching road. It is mostly flat, with a gradual descent down the slopes leading north from the Jarbidge range. In May and June, this area is full of outstanding wildflowers. There are also lots of songbirds, jackrabbits, hawks, and cows. It isn't the most scenic section of the ICT, but it still has its own charm.

There is absolutely no shade anywhere along this trail, so come prepared with sunscreen and appropriate clothing.

It is important to note that current maps of the ICT show the trail hooking away towards the east from Poison Butte before returning west to a road that runs along the north side of the butte, but according to brand new signage that was put up this spring, the trail currently follows the GPS track I put up. The trail that was in place several years ago is almost completely reabsorbed into the landscape, and is very difficult to follow. There are also no signs directing hikers to the old trail anywhere.

Flora & Fauna

Paintbrush, sagebrush, cheat grass, lots of wildflowers, hawks, songbirds, pronghorn, mule deer, bighorn sheep.
