Need to Know

Grizzly Peak Trail #3428 is accessed via Pamelia Lake Trail #3439. To access this area you need a Central Cascades Wilderness Permit available on a limited basis from Recreation.gov. The parking area also requires a $5 day use fee or permit (covered by the NW Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Passes).

Description

To get to this trail you'll need to follow Pamelia Lake Trail #3439 for about 2.2 miles to a clearly marked intersection. Turn south, cross a creak bed that is dry most of the year (Pamelia Creek emerges from underground further down the valley), and begin climbing up the north face of Grizzly Peak. The trail is, for the most part, a modest grade and relatively unobstructed by roots or large rocks so the going is fairly straight forward.

After about 0.85 miles you'll come to a small but lovely waterfall that floods the trail. This spot may be difficult to cross with dry feet when the creek's flow is high. After the falls you'll start a few switchbacks, see another slightly obstructed falls, and cross the same creek higher up at 1.3 miles. At about 2.2 miles the trail makes the ridge of Grizzly Peak and the views to Mount Jefferson open up! Far below is Pamelia Lake.

Continue south on the ridge to a final switchback that leads to the summit. An old fire watch tower once stood here. Trees obstruct most views aside from straight to Mount Jefferson. Few trails take you so close to the mountain - enjoy the view!
