Stillwater Trail

This is a one of the more popular trails in the Orono area. It starts from Main Street just south of the bridge and heads north along the river. There is sometimes parking on the right, but be sure not to park in any resident parking spots.

The trail starts fairly wide and the first section can be covered in wood chips. This is done to try to protect the trail as it often gets muddy in the spring. Around 0.6 miles along, the trail becomes narrower and the wood chips disappear. As the trail pops out of the woods, you'll pass a series of warehouses. Please stay on the trail and respect this property. Continuing along the river, the trail is dirt singletrack with some rocks and roots, but nothing too difficult. At 1.4 miles, Fox Hole Trail turns sharply back to the west. This side trail access Bennoch Road.

As you head north, the trail eventually starts to peel away from the river and at about 1.7 miles you'll come out onto a dead-end dirt road. Follow this dirt road up to the end of Stillwater Trail at Spring Street. There aren't usually cars on this dirt road, but stay alert.

There are numerous spots along this trail to stop and take in the views along the river, just be sure you aren't stopping on private property. There are even a couple of swimming spots. This trail is amazing in the autumn when the leaves are changing.

This trail is multi-use. Please use caution, respect other users, and yield appropriately.
