Discovery Pass needed to park at Grouse Vista trailhead.

This trail starts from a clear intersection on Tarbell Trail a very short distance from Grouse Vista TrailHead. The road to Grouse Vista is windy and rocky, but accessible for pretty much any car, unlike the easiest route: Silver Star Summit trailhead off of NF-4109. This means that Grouse Vista 180F can be as crowded as Silver Star Trail #180 from the north.

Most of this trail is rocky singletrack, with better trail at the bottom in the forest. You'll climb steady through forest to start, but soon enter the clearing left from the massive fire in the early 1900s. For the next mile or so you'll have clear views to Sturgeon Rock to the northeast and Pyramid Rock along the eastern side of the trail. Silver Silver Star Summit is ahead of you, which is probably where you're headed if you're on this trail. Unfortunately there are no views of the Cascade volcanoes.

Just over half way (1.25 miles) you'll pass a trail intersection for an alternative trail along the east side of Pyramid Rock, but this was pretty overgrown in early 2019. You can also scramble up Pyramid Rock from this side trail and gain better views of Hood.

The last part of the trail enters thick forest again. The rocks on this section are very loose so mind your footing! Grouse Vista 180F ends at Silver Star Trail #180 south of the Silver Star Summit Trail #180D. To get to the summit continue north on #180.
