Description
From the lookout at the bluffs on Lynn Mountain, head north to a signed junction about 20 m from the bluff. Continue north on this trail to the summit of South Needle. The route is occasionally obscured by encroaching brush or fallen trees; however, the trail is very well flagged, so losing the trail is unlikely.
Expect periodic obstacles including fallen trees and steep sections as you climb and descend rollers toward the true summit of Lynn Peak. The singletrack in this section is invigorating—it weaves through ancient groves of giant cedar and hemlock and is padded by their fallen needles. The route is seldom flat; you'll enjoy steep climbs and hair raising descents as you trend upwards to the summit of Lynn Peak, whereupon you'll glimpse the summit of South Needle for the first time.
Just prior to the final push to the summit, there is an unobtrusive junction; the trail to the right is
Hydraulic Creek Trail, a fun alternative descent route. Make note of the location of the junction because it is very hard to spot on the descent from the peak.
Push to the summit on steep, rooty trail. The route becomes hands-on immediately prior to the summit as the forest gives way to bare granite. The view from the summit is 360-degrees, expansive, and full value. Enjoy!
Descend by returning the way you came to
Lynn Ridge Trail junction, or you can descend
Hydraulic Creek Trail down the east side of the ridge.
