Description
A lightly used trail through beautiful aspen groves to a pass with a beautiful view. The grade is fairly steady and is easy at first and steeper towards the top.
The trail receives such light use, it is pretty easy to lose the trail. It gets fainter the further you go, and it is extremely faint towards the top. It would be easy to miss an important turn towards the saddle (about 4.5 miles in or a half mile from the pass) were it not for a sign. Maps + compass or GPS recommended.
The trail is not very well maintained, and there is uneven tread in some spots, and other areas with fallen logs that volunteers occasionally clear; some stream crossings require balancing on logs during high runoff. Great views from the ridge, including views of Mt. Antora and the San Luis Valley with the Sangre de Cristo mountains beyond.
Flora & Fauna
On 6/15/2019, we saw a lone elk in the aspen forest, and also scared up a very protective wild turkey hen with her chicks.
