Description

The Canebrake Trail, an old road, is well maintained and easy to follow. The trail itself is unremarkable, so hiking it is more about the destination than the journey. The trail ends at the Foothills Trail where the Toxaway River and Toxaway Creek empty into Lake Jocassee. Two suspension bridges mean no wading to cross Toxaway Creek or the Toxaway River. We crossed one or two small springs on the way, but bring enough water to get to the lake.

There are six camp sites along Toxaway Creek and lake, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. Camping is only allowed in the designated sites and there really is no place to camp on the trail anyway. On a late Saturday night in August, there were more boaters in the camp sites than hikers, but there was plenty of room.

Keep in mind that what was downhill on the way in is uphill on the way out. It is not difficult, but there is not much up and down, so it will take a while.
