Description
The trail starts at Twin Lakes Campgroup, next to Campsite #41. The ascent is immediate, but steady. The first 2 miles are mostly through forest as you make your way up to the "dragon's spine". After the first few switchbacks, you start seeing glimpses of Twin Lakes and the town of Mammoth Lakes. At about 1 mile, the trail turns sharply left with
Seven Lakes Point Loop #2307B continuing straight ahead towards Hole in the Wall. Half a mile later,
Mammoth Mountain - Mammoth Pass Trail descends on your left, continue uphill, followed shortly after by another switchback.
Seven Lakes Point Loop Trail rejoins again, putting you now on the back of the "dragon's spine". The views are magnificent throughout the rest of the way. To the north, you can see Lincoln Mountain. To the east is the town of Mammoth Lakes. To the south, you can see Horseshoe Lake, Lake Mamie, and Lake Mary. The ascent is steep at times, despite numerous smaller switchbacks. Trees become scarce and stop entirely at about 2.5 miles. The trail is obvious to follow, but the loose scree requires caution. Finally reach the top of Mammoth Mountain with panoramic views in all directions.
