Description

The trailhead starts off FSR #1639a (Dickey Creek Road) out of the town of Essex. You have to just pull off the road, as there's not much of a parking area. The trail follows Dickey Creek all the way to the lake. The first 1.5 miles are gradual, but that's before the last hard push to the lake. There's not much zig-zagging in this trail, so it's mostly straight up for the last 0.5 miles but the views at the lake are stunning. The lake sits in a 270-degree cirque with 3 peaks towering over 7800 feet—almost 2000 feet above the water level. The creek was flowing hard in spring from the large amounts of snow melt. During summer months the lake should shallow out and could provide a nice place to cool off before heading back down.
