Family Friendly This is an easy trail that is adjacent to a river in many spots.

The trail is a Rails-to-Trails legal right of way that passes through several working farms. Be respectful of the farms and do not detour off the trail onto private property.

Need to Know

Since a 2003 storm, the bridge over South River washed away and has not been replaced. The trail therefore briefly detours onto Stuartsburg Road (Route 608) and crosses over South River on the vehicle bridge.

Description

The gravel trail runs along the site of the former C&O Railroad and is now maintained by Virginia Military Institute (VMI).
The trail runs adjacent to the Maury River, and in places (primarily west of the I-81 overpass) it is possible to access the river to swim directly from the trail without trespassing on private property.

As a great multi-use option in the area, don't be surprised to see cyclists out enjoying the trail. There are eight farm gates along the way, and all but one have recently been replaced with bicycle-friendly accessways.

Parking and access to the trail is available at each end and where the trail crosses South River.

Flora & Fauna

You pass through several working farms, and there are always cattle grazing in the fields. Mink, ducks, geese, egrets, and bald eagles are frequently spotted along the trail.
