Wilderness rules apply. There is a mandatory self-issuing permit system at the trailhead that hikers and backpackers are obliged to utilize. Though open year-round, snow and winter conditions may make access difficult or impossible.

Description

The first part of the trail briefly follows the road as it starts its initial, gentle climb. It continue until it hits Threemile Creek where it turns and follows the creek northeast. The trail is in a narrow valley with many stream crossings.

As the route swings more toward the east, the valley gradually begins to open up into a meadow. As you wrap around Spearhead Mountain and get to its eastern side, the trail starts to switchback and rises steeply away from the creek. Once beyond the switchbacks, the trail makes a northward turn. After some more hiking, you'll be met with open tundra, views of Kataka Mountain on your left, and the stunning Mount Evans and Mount Bierstadt ahead. From here the trail descends slightly to meet the Rosalie Trail.
