Description

This is a beautiful hike that starts at the base of the Remarkables Ski Area and goes to Lake Alta just beyond the edge of the ski area. It's not a long trail but the second half where it departs from the dirt ski area road and heads into the glacial cirque is rugged and steep in places. The trail features several ecological interpretive signs. Note: chilly weather is possible even in summer; we had snow flurries in January.

Lord of the Rings aficionados may recognize Alta Lake as Dimrill Dale where the fellowship exits the Mines of Moria after losing Gandalf during his battle with the Balrog.

Flora & Fauna

Sedges, rushes, snow tussock, sundews, giant white buttercup, snow marguerie, New Zealand edelweiss, moss capsules, Spaniard, grasshoppers, day-flying moth
