An easy trail through rehabilitated logging land follows a nice creek with excellent swimming holes to a nice waterfall

Wes Hill

Overview

Features: Fall Colors — River/Creek — Swimming — Waterfall — Wildflowers
Family Friendly: An easy grade, frequent access points for the rivers swimming holes and a nice waterfall makes the trail a family friendly destination.
Dogs: No Dogs

Description

From the parking lot, the fairly gentle grade leads you through land once ravaged by logging operations. The huge boulders that line the trail in places are the result of the extensive erosion that occurred in the valley once the trees and ground cover were removed. A new succession of trees have taken over, so once again the area is shady and cool. The river features numerous swimming holes, the most popular one is known as the Midnight Hole. Dark turquoise water and a small waterfall makes for a very inviting spot. Further up, Mouse Creek Falls roars down from the opposite ridge.

Flora & Fauna

I hiked here on a cold and icy winter day, so the flora was restricted to hardy mosses and lichens, rhododendrons and other winter plants. There were birds flitting about, mostly juncos and chicadees. As a reached the trailhead on the way back to the car, I spotted three whitetail deer a few yards above the trail. They slowly made their way through the underbrush before disappearing over the ridge.
