This trail starts at its junction with the Starvation Ridge Trail #414
and ends at its junction with the Mount Defiance Trail #413
, passing Warren Lake and the Warren Lake Trail #417A
enroute. This trail is well-traveled since it forms part of the demanding, but still popular, hike to the summit of Mount Defiance
From its junction with the #414, the #417 climbs easily for 0.9 mile to a junction with Warren Lake Trail #417A
, coming in from the service road going to the summit. Continue on the #417 as it heads slightly downhill for 0.3 mile to charming little Warren Lake, nestled in a bowl on the side of Mount Defiance
. There are several established campsites at the lake.
Past Warren Lake, the #417 climbs some more, and after 0.7 miles, ends at its the junction with Mount Defiance Trail #413
Note that some maps show the #417 starting at a road east of its junction with the #414. This short piece of trail is on private land, has been subjected to logging, and is apparently no longer a viable part of the #417.
