Description

This short loop trail near Deer Flats Group Campground is worth the detour if you are hiking in this area. It starts and ends near the junction of the paved Deer Flat Road and the dirt South Hawkins Road #3N07. The right fork passes through an unusually dense grove of white fir then enters a more mixed forest of oaks and pines reaching a viewing point with a bench. The trail returns on the east side with oaks and mountain mahogany back to the starting location.

What makes this ridge so interesting is that it was formed when a portion of Islip Ridge slid down. Rock and debris filled in behind the slide to create Deer Flat.

Deer Flats Group Campground is currently closed so you'll likely have this trail to yourself.

Flora & Fauna

White fir, various pines, oaks. Deer, bear, foxes squirrels.
