Description
This segment of the North Country Trail combines a mixture of paved trail, dirt footpath, and city sidewalk trail—mostly through the Valley City State University campus. Enjoy a fantastic overlook of Valley City and the famous Hi-Line Bridge to the north before dropping into the woods and then popping out on city streets. The trail crosses the Sheyenne River three times on historic bridges. Valley City is known as the City of Bridges and offers a Bridge Tour; for more information see ndtourism.com/valley-city/f….
The trail starts at the Medicine Wheel Park which features a replica of a medicine wheel (solar calendar) and a to-scale hiking tour of the solar system. For more info, visit medicinewheel.vcsu.edu/. The trail segment continues north past the Rosebud Visitor Center—a great spot for learning more about the area's history (see ndtourism.com/valley-city/f…)—and through downtown to the north edge of Valley City past the Hi-Line bridge. The trail also continues west and then south through the Valley City State University campus to I-94 and then along CR-21 (Kathryn Road) paralleling the Sheyenne River. Note: there is no designated parking south/west of the Medicine Wheel Park.
