This is best done with a shuttle up and hike back down. A shuttle up for sunrise is a very popular option.
**We recommend that we coordinate a taxi for you leaving at 4am from the lodge, it will be 120soles (May 2013), and should have you there for 6am in time to see sun rise on Huascaran 6768m, Huandoy 6395m, Pisco 5752m, Chacaraju 6112m and Chopicalqui mountains 6354m. The taxi will drop you off just in front of the cutting without going through it. This is the spot to watch sunrise from if you are in time. (If you wanted to get higher for photos you can follow this path up to the left for 3 minutes until you reach the edge of the cutting. the original path was cut through by the road and you can see its remnants on the other side. Follow down this path to start your trek heading around the mountain to the left).***
Once you have taken your photos you'll want to hike down the Inca trail back in the direction of the lodge. NOT BACK DOWN THE ROAD. To find the trail, stand with your back to the cutting on the edge overlooking Huascaran, look 90 degrees to your left and you'll see a trail heading off there, follow this until you reach an obvious trail.Take it down to the RIGHT. Follow down this path to start your trek heading around the mountain to the left.
Follow this path until it gets back to the road. At the road follow down the road until you get to Km. 37. At Km.37 head into the bushes to your left, to find the remnants of the trail going to your right and skirting round the hillside. (The Km 37 marker may not be there, but it is painted on a rock to your right hand side.) This will shortly take you back to the road in less than 5 minutes. above the road keep left and drop down onto the road. Cross the road. Go to the corner of the switchback and on the very corner of the switchback head into through the bushes to refind the trail.
Re-find the Inca Trail and go straight across the stream that you come to and through the bushes ahead, the trail is faint, but if you are heading in the right direction within two minutes you'll be back on a very obvious trail. This trail will take you back to the road; where you hit the road, head straight back across onto the trail on the other side. When this trail next gets to the road it will be just uphill of a bridge with red railings, go on the road across this bridge, follow the road until it bends relatively sharply to the left. Here head down off the edge of
